Glycosphingolipids

Skin barrier conditioning agent Support / formulation
What it is

Glycosphingolipids are lipid molecules consisting of a ceramide backbone linked to a carbohydrate group, naturally found in the skin's stratum corneum where they help maintain the lipid barrier. In cosmetic formulations they are used as emollients and barrier-supporting agents to improve hydration and reduce transepidermal water loss.

Contact allergic reactionVery rareAllergic sensitization is uncommon; reactions may relate to other formulation components rather than the glycosphingolipids themselves.
Comedogenicity / clogged poresRareAs a lipid-based ingredient, theoretical pore-clogging is possible in acne-prone individuals, though not well documented.
