Methodology
We analysed the printed INCI ingredient lists of 3,345 skincare products sold on major Indian marketplaces. Each ingredient was canonicalised and cross-referenced against structured dermatology reference data: Malassezia (fungal-acne) substrate lists, published comedogenicity ratings, the EU's declared-allergen list, alcohol classification, and pregnancy-caution guidance. A product is counted once per category if it contains at least one flagged ingredient. Flags describe ingredients, not product performance — this is not a safety ranking of any brand or product.
What share of Indian skincare products contain fungal-acne triggers?
72% — 2,411 of the 3,345 products analysed contain at least one ingredient reported to feed Malassezia, the yeast behind fungal acne. Particularly relevant in India's humid climate.
How many Indian skincare products contain fragrance?
39% (1,310 of 3,345) list fragrance or an EU-declared allergen — relevant for sensitive or reactive skin.
How many products contain pregnancy-caution ingredients?
22% (741 of 3,345) contain at least one ingredient commonly flagged for caution during pregnancy in published guidance.
How was this computed?
From the printed INCI ingredient lists of 3,345 skincare products sold in India, cross-referenced against dermatology reference data (Malassezia substrates, comedogenicity ratings, EU allergen declarations, alcohol type, pregnancy-caution lists).
